As one listens to reports of the current state of our strong U.S. economy it’s tempting to think that the outlook is rosy for American Families. Yet, in spite of this encouraging economic outlook, household consumer debt remains at an all-time high. In fact, as of May 2018, the average U.S. household is carrying $16,000 in credit card debt alone, and a total of $133, 568 with all types of debt combined. Total U.S. consumer debt has reached $13.15 Trillion dollars.
The stark reality is that financial risks and dangers for low/moderate income families continue to be a very present issue. A recent survey reported that approximately 1/3 of U.S. households with any credit card debt report overspending out of necessity on budget categories like food, energy and medicine – and they are using their credit cards to pay for it. The economic reality for these families is that at some point they will reach a tipping point. There is still a problem to solve, and CESI will be part of the solution.
At CESI, we are committed to the vision of every individual and family having the opportunity to realize economic success, even when they experience obstacles or mistakes that hinder their forward momentum. Our primary objective is to provide the support and resources to help people overcome financial obstacles and access opportunities to change their financial future.
2017-2018 has been a year of change for CESI. Our team has worked tirelessly to strengthen our core service of financial counseling while expanding our services through several innovative new programs. We launched a new Community Lending and Financial Wellness program that allows us to partner with local employers to assist their employees with emergency loans to protect them from predatory lending alternatives. We recently partnered with a national non-profit to empower consumers to build economic security through savings and debt reduction. In addition we have established partnerships with other local non-profits in our region to coordinate services and measure success. We have a renewed commitment to finding more innovative ways to create economic opportunity.
October 2018 will mark the 20th anniversary of CESI. As we complete our second decade of service, we could not be prouder of the legacy that we have developed. We have assisted millions of individuals and families to promote economic success, and we look forward to the next twenty years of fulfilling our mission of providing enhanced economic security for everyone we serve.
We always welcome your questions, comments, and suggestions, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at any time.
