Greg Smalls Receives NFCC Outstanding Advocate Award

Greg Smalls, Director of Housing Development at CESI is passionate about helping individuals and families realize their dream of homeownership. He works tirelessly to help families accomplish that goal. For this reason, Smalls was awarded the NFCC 2019 Outstanding Advocate Award at NFCC Connect, the annual gathering of the nation’s largest and longest-serving network of nonprofits dedicated to financial well-being. The awards were presented the evening of September 17 in Arlington, Virginia.

Smalls has been a key leader at NFCC member Consumer Education Services Inc. (CESI) since 2002. He has held numerous positions: Credit Counselor, Team Coach, HUD Certified Housing Counselor, Certified Reverse Mortgage Counselor, and is currently the Director for the HUD-approved CESI Homeownership Center.

“Throughout his years with CESI, Greg has served with excellence, counseling clients and coaching the CESI staff for success,” said Mike Croxson, CEO. “His more than 17 years experience has given him a depth of knowledge about the credit counseling and housing industry that is unmatched.”

Smalls led the CESI Homeownership Center in accomplishing the following:

  • Assisted 30 low income families in purchasing a home by qualifying under the Community Partners Loan Pool. Smalls was instrumental in obtaining more than $1M in funding for these families from this program.
  • Provided foreclosure prevention services to 96 families, helping to find alternative solutions to foreclosure.
  • Provided face to face education to 267 students at CESI Homebuyers Workshops. Smalls personally led a total of 26 of these workshops.
  • Spearheaded the implementation of a matched savings program through CESI to assist low-to–moderate income homebuyers in the purchase of affordable housing by offering matching funds to be used for closing costs or down payment assistance.
  • Provided counseling to 96 senior homeowners, educating them on the available options and resources to stay in their home and age in place.

Smalls speaks several times a year to the Raleigh Realtors Association, informing and educating regional realtors about the various down payment assistance programs available to their prospective low-to-moderate income homebuyers. Traditionally, these buyers have been overlooked and underserved in the community with regard to housing.
