Beach sunset

Spring break is quickly approaching and that means it’s time to start planning where you want to go and what you want to do with your family.

This is possibly the one time of the year when families have the chance to get together and get away. Popular spring break destinations such as Walt Disney World in Orlando will cater to vacationing families and will probably be overpriced and overcrowded at this time of the year. If you want to do spring break on a budget you’ll need to avoid traditional tourist spots.

When planning your family vacation think outside the box and consider one of these popular spring break family destinations:

Destin, Florida

If your family wants to spend spring break at the beach Destin, Florida is the place to be. It’s located on Florida’s Emerald Coast and is known for its miles of gorgeous beaches. The Harbor Boardwalk is also a must-see for visitors according to the City of Destin. It’s a quarter of a mile of gorgeous views, fishing boat charters and good restaurants. There are houses for rent in Destin that are great for families that want their own space to hang out in. You can use websites such as FlipKey.com or AirBnB to book houses and check prices.

Dominican Republic

If the Caribbean is where you want to go this year consider an all-inclusive resort for your spring break on a budget. Not having to worry about cooking makes the vacation more relaxing for parents. All-inclusive resorts usually offer a variety of fun outdoor activities for kids of all ages.

According to Trip Advisor Now Larimar Punta Cana and Grand Bahia Principe Cayacoa are great family-friendly destinations in the Dominican Republic. Remember to book early for big savings and to guarantee availability.

Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix is a fun destination for the family who likes to be outdoors. There are a lot of things to do in all parts of Arizona such as nature walks and hiking, as well as bike trails and the Desert Botanical Gardens. For the sports fans in the family, there is the option to watch MLB spring training. Visit Phoenix recommends South Mountain Park, McDowell Mountain, and Camelback Mountain.

Phoenix, Arizona has an international airport and you can look for cheap flights on discount travel websites such as Kayak.com, Priceline.com and Expedia.com.

Washington, D.C.

If you want to stay on the East Coast this spring break consider visiting Washington, D.C. There are several free family-friendly activities such as the Smithsonian Museum, the National Air and Space Museum and the National Zoo. Of course, there are also historic sites to see such as the White House, the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

Keep in mind that Washington is a town you can see on foot so if you have young children be sure to bring their strollers. There are two major airports nearby. For cheaper hotel prices consider staying in nearby Fairfax or Alexandria, Virginia.
