Did you have piggy bank savings while growing up? The odds are you probably did. Little ceramic pigs have been a savings mechanism for families and children all around the world for several years. Over time, pink pigs with curly tails have evolved into superheroes, toy trains and a variety of other sorts of animals. All that to say that piggy banks aren’t only pigs anymore, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes for every child’s (and adult’s) individual tastes.
With banks introducing savings accounts for kids and teenagers, you may think our little piggy friends have become a thing of the past. But that’s not the case. The truth is piggy bank savings will always be in style and here are four really good reasons why everyone should have one.
They make a great gift
Piggy banks are great as a birthday gift. They’re cute, they look good in a child’s room and they promote healthy money habits. Could you think of a better gift? A variety of stores from Hallmark to Target sell piggy banks so there is definitely a gift out there for every gift giver’s budget and every receiver’s taste.
They encourage kids to make money
Every time a child sees the piggy bank in their room they will (hopefully) want to fill it up with coins and dollar bills alike. Just the site of somewhere to put money makes people want to earn money to put in it. This can result in kids wanting to open a weekend lemonade stand, doing weekly chores around the house, starting a paper route or taking on babysitting gigs. It’s too bad kids can’t sell mud pies for profit.
They teach kids about saving
Giving a child their first piggy bank is like investing in their future. Piggy bank savings are a fantastic way to teach kids about the value of a dollar. If they work hard and save money they’ll be able to afford all the things they want in life. Yes, it’s true, much can be said for piggy bank savings.
When money is held in a bank account kids can’t see or touch it, but kids like to play with things. Piggy bank savings let them count and keep track of their money right from the comfort from their own bedroom. They can watch their money add up -- literally.
They’re not just for kids anymore
Who says that piggy bank savings are just for kids? Adults can use them too. If you have a passion the odds are that you can buy a piggy bank to throw your change in -- it just may not be an actual pig. Nowadays we can buy savings banks in almost any form from our favorite sports team to our favorite beverage. It’s a great way to remind ourselves that savings are important even as adults.
